Emmanuel Van der Auwera

In Emmanuel van der Auwera’s series of video sculptures, the notion of screen as window to reality is literally stripped of its flatness, symbolically revealing the underlying mechanism of televisions. These sculptures are part of an ongoing body of work that applies deconstructive analysis to the process of producing ‘reality’. They build out of questions he began examining with the work “A Certain Amount of Clarity”, and are characterized by their formal and conceptual rigour, using the screen (the altar of the contemporary image) as material for sculpture, and peeling back it’s layers as a painter might do. Video content for these sculptures is appropriated and edited from found footage and/or produced by the artist. The artist approaches the present ‘reality’ like an archaeologist who looks at historical evidence, highlighting the transformation of time-space axis in modern society and tattooing the message into the flesh of the medium. VideoSculptures have appeared in the exhibitions “Riddle of the Burial Grounds,” Extra City, Antwerp (curated by Tessa Gibbons), “The Act of Staring at the Sun,” V2 space, Charleroi (curated by Benoit Dusart), Hisk Graduate Show 2016, Ghent (curated by Selen Anselm) and at The Loft in Brussels as part of the Servais Family Collection.

Emmanuel Van der Auwera, born in 1982 in Brussels, lives and works in Brussels. He studied in France at the École supérieure d’Art in Clermont-Ferrand (2005-2008) and at Le Fresnoy: Studio national des arts contemporains (2008-2010). He is Laureate of a post-academic course at the Higher Institute of Fine Arts (HISK) in Ghent (2014-2015) and recipient of the Langui Award of the Young Belgian Art Prize. In 2016, his work featured in exhibitions at the Centre Pompidou, Extra City, Meymac Contemporary Art Centre,”Indiscipline,” Palais de Tokyo (curated by Devrim Bayar/WIELS), “Now Belgium Now,” LLS 387, Antwerp, “A Prisoner’s Cinema,” Iselp, and “The End of the World,” Centro per l’arte contemporanea Luigi Pecci (Prato, Italy).
