Marcin Dudek

Marcin Dudek works with objects, installations, collage and performance, touching upon questions regarding control in society, the hierarchy of power, and mechanisms ruling the release of violence and aggression as seen from sociological, historical, and psychological standpoints. Dudek’s use of abstraction to deal with these questions amplifies the labour, anxiety and the compulsive approach that characterise his process of image production. Using a knife to cut slivers of tape, they become an almost therapeutic balance to the first hand experiences brought forward in his ongoing series of performances. The extreme attention to detail transforms the use of a knife into a series of sophisticated gestures, as the artist wanders through a stadium, slicing away at established strategies employed to control the human will. These collages touch upon the politico-historical dimensions of unpredictable behavior of uncontrolled masses as Dudek analyses the abstract concept of aggression, triggered often and not quite consciously, within the architecture of any given spectacle.

After leaving Poland aged 21, Marcin Dudek studied at the University of Art Mozarteum, Salzburg, and Central Saint Martins, London, graduating in 2005 and 2007 respectively. His work has been exhibited internationally at institutions including Moscow Museum of Modern Art, Kunstlerhaus, Salzburg, the Arad Art Museum, Bunkier Sztuki and the Goethe Institute, Kiev. His installation “The Cathedral of Human Labor”, 2013, is on permanent view at the Verbeke Foundation in Antwerp.
