This work is part of an extensive series of paintings started during the WIELS Residency Programme, which will feature in Crossley’s forthcoming publication “Body Social” that is to be released during his 2021 exhibition in the WIELS Project Space. The series, a suite of over 70 paintings, employs a diverse vocabulary of subject matter and aesthetic approaches. In these paintings we see for example, vegetal forms, individual letters, social and biological structures, empty spaces, neurological diagrams and references to craft and class. Associations and diversions within the series begin to turn into transformations and repetitions as a failure in one painting transposes itself as a solution in another. Similar to a mode of writing, internal classifications gradually develop into networks or chapters - a rigorously open-ended system of independent visual positions that exemplifies painting as a modality of thought.
