The drawing is a rubbing of an inscription which reads “Ruach not Rauch.” Ruach is the ancient Hebrew word for the breath of God. In Genesis the universe is inaugurated through this divine breath, linking breath and wind with creation as in many cultures. Rauch is the modern German word for smoke created through burning something.
By arranging the text as a repetition a cycle of creation and destruction is made. Instead of affirming a transcendental notion, the vocabulary used renders this cycle as historically specific.
