The Forerunner is part of a series of bronzed weeds, which started in 2014 with the work The Pioneer. It is a cast of the Ditricchia Viscossa, a plant that belongs to a pioneer species and has a biochemical composition which prevents other plants from growing in its immediate surroundings. In Israel, it is often one of the first types of vegetation that can be found growing on disturbed soil. The work bears reference to both the Israeli settlers and the term ‘Forerunner of Zionism’ or ‘Proto-Zionism’ - a group of men who aimed to establish a Jewish state in Palestine, influenced by nationalistic ideas that were widely spread in 19th-century Europe - and the plant itself, an aggressive and territorializing species.
