Estadio is a continuation of Marcin Dudek’s series of stadium and event portraits. Here, the piece delves into the 1964 Estadio Nacional disaster in Lima, Peru, where a pitch invasion led to a brutal police response, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of supporters. In the lower right third of the panel, a small photograph from this event: a fan suspended in mid-motion, between a swinging police officer and a confused athlete.
The man’s oddly jutting arms create momentum for the rest of the composition; he is the individual who was blamed for inciting the deadly riot, though of course this narrative omits the social and political tensions already running high that day. These three are the only distinguishable characters, in a panel clouded with swarms of medical tape, burnt linen, and translucent paint washes. Estadio reflects on one body’s place in history, as seen through a veil of time, misinformation, and confusion.
