Forty years after Chambres d'Amis, the conversation continues-from home to home, city to city.

Chambres d’Amis, 1986, Archive S.M.A.K.
In his seminal 1986 exhibition Chambres d'Amis, Jan Hoet proposed that art belongs in life - not just in institutions or galleries, but in living rooms, in conversations, amongst friends.

This project honors and reimagines that exhibition, using its proposition as a point of departure to open space for cultural gatherings, unusual exhibitions and intellectual exchange. In each edition, the artist, curator and host change. What remains constant is a shared curiosity and a commitment to art, poetry, and hospitality.

The first edition featured works by American artist TR Ericsson nearly a decade after his works appeared in the city during the Dallas Art Fair.

The second edition featured a talk between Belgian artist Emmanuel Van der Auwera and Lucia Simek, the Executive Director of Dallas Contemporary. This event was hosted by the Augustus Owen Foundation.

October 2025

The third edition featured a talk between Sheida Soleimani and DJ Hellerman, the Deputy Director & Senior Curator of The Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland (moCa). Together, they discussed the entanglements of image-making, environmental grief, and the aesthetics of resistance – moving fluidly across topics from wildlife rehabilitation to the politics of visibility and care.

October 2025

The fourth edition featured a talk between Ria Verhaeghe and Philippe Van Cauteren, the Artistic Director of S.M.A.K. (Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst) in Ghent, Belgium. Together, they discussed Verhaeghe's long-running project, Provisoria, which has culminated this year in a publication containing over 3,500 archival images.

The fifth edition, featured a talk between artist Haseeb Ahmed and curator Justine Ludwig who returned to Dallas for this event after settling into her new role as Creative Director of Getty’s PST ART.

The seventh edition featured a talk between artist Ella Littwitz and DJ Hellerman, the Deputy Director & Senior Curator of The Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland (moCa). The gathering offered an intimate introduction to Ella's work ahead of her first U.S. institutional solo exhibition at moCa Cleveland, opening in April 2027.

The eighth edition of Chambre d'Amis commemorates the 40th anniversary of Jan Hoet's 1986 exhibition. Philippe Van Cauteren, the General Director of S.M.A.K. (Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst), will join us in Dallas to celebrate, in discussion with the artist Marcin Dudek.
