During Theodor Herzl’s only visit to Palestine (1898) he planted a tree, which was thought to be Cedar and turned out to be Cypress. In 1915, this tree was burned in act of Turkish nationalism and eventually cut after failed rescue attempts. The upper part was taken to Bezalel by two art students and there Boris Schatz declared that from this wood the pole of the flag of the Jewish state would be created. During the 1948 war, the stump was kept safe by soldiers and chauffeured in armored vehicles before being returned to its original location and placed in a cage.
