The earlier version, now in the permanent collection of the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, saw a ten-year collection of glass from broken car windows presented like precious minerals that spoke of the darker side of city living. “City Jewels II” (2008) is composed of the remains of shattered advertising shelters, all collected on New Year’s Day 2008 after being smashed to bits the night before. The artist’s studio is full of collections like these, salvaged over years from city streets around Europe and including glass, asphalt, rocks, tapes, signs and other items pulled from street to studio.
