The works presented here by Camille Orso Caël take the city as both stage and subject. For Blissful Asphalt, the artist wandered Brussels, often returning to trace the shifting path of sunlight, staging quiet, near-choreographed moments with friends and strangers. The result is a poetic ensemble of images, which subtly capture remnants of civil disobedience.
Camille Orso Caël (fka Camille Picquot) works in photography, film, and text. Their artistic work focuses on themes of margins, urban habits, resistance, and enchantment; it seeks possibilities of emancipation – large and small, concrete and poetic – within late capitalism. They were trained at ENSAV La Cambre (Brussels, BE), as well as the KASK (Ghent, BE). Orso Caël was a 2022 resident of the WIELS Centre for Contemporary Art (Brussels, BE). Their work has been exhibited at the WIELS, FOMU - Photo Museum Antwerp (BE), Vlaams Cultuurhuis de Brakke Grond (Amsterdam, NL), Marres (Maastricht, NL), Fotomuseum Winterthur (Winterthur, CH), ETE-78 (Brussels, BE), Paris Photo (FR), among many others. Their first monograph, Domestic Flights, was published in 2018 by Art Paper Editions. Their films have been recognized with various distinctions: Hollow Hours was awarded a Wildcard by the Flemish Audiovisual Fund; Cao Bang was selected by the International Film Festival (IFFR) in Rotterdam; Orso Caël is currently a guest filmmaker at Auguste Orts (Brussels, BE), where they recently finished their newest film, "Swarm".
