Soleimani’s father made the dangerous, two-week-long trek across the Zagros Mountains into Turkey on horseback with the help of two guides. In this image, he appears shoeless, as a reference to the point in the journey when his guide forced him to dismount his horse and run in the snow to regain feeling in his frost-bitten toes. Soleimani depicts her father on horseback, a pose that throughout art history has been reserved for rulers, soldiers, and other powerful men.
