Deltang is one of the rare works in which Soleimani’s mother (or mâmân)’s face appears, at least partially, inside of a rearview mirror. The yellow rubber is framed with scorpions, sentinels patrolling a dim, desertic landscape; the gravelly pink sand sharply contrasts with the lush, sunlit greenery which haloes her silver hair. Somehow in the reflection appears another place, another time, a glimpse of memory. The mirror becomes a window, in the series’ language of political magical realism. Deltang (دلتنگ ) translates literally to “tight heart”, an image used to express longing, or homesickness.
