In Taghato, Soleimani’s mother grips the suitcase that held her belongings when she left home for college and when she fled Iran for the United States. The checkerboard pattern in the background of the photograph refers to the luck and chance involved in migrants’ journeys, and the leaves are from a tamarind tree she planted from seeds she brought with her from her family garden in Shiraz.
