Dudek’s series of oil paintings titled NEST begins with photographs of historic amphitheaters and colosseums, reflections on how he discovered community and a sense of home in stadiums. These forms then expand into wild abstractions, populated with landscapes and characters from his youth. Remarkably, these are the first paintings he has made in over twenty years, yet the visual language he developed through two decades of tape collage now manifests in brushstrokes. The works reveal Dudek’s singular fluency with oil, translating the rigor, inventiveness, and layered narrative of his mixed-media practice into a painterly language that is immediate, intricate, and wholly original.
