"Lacrydoll: A River of Tears
Today, tears express what we struggle to say otherwise. In a world saturated with images and noise, they cloud our vision and become signs-intimate and collective flows capable of linking our personal experiences to the broader issues of life.
This exhibition aims to establish an emotional connection with river water.
We are interested in rivers because they represent entities that are often transboundary and circulating-entities with which those who frequent them can identify.
We think in particular of the many waterways between Belgium and France: the Eau Noire (see the Battle of the Eau Noire), the Oise, the Houille, the Massembre stream...
This image is foundational for the exhibition curators, as it synthesizes three sensibilities: that of "message personnel" (curated by Delphine de la Roche, 2023, Paris), that of "Aquaturf" (by Antoine Carbonne, 2021, Brussels), while also fitting into the programming of the Centre Wallonie-Bruxelles / Paris.
At the origin of rivers: springs.
Pagan cultures have always attributed a mystical dimension to them.
Emanating from the pagan source of the lacrydolls, rivers channel the sorrows of the world and merge them with their own strength and defenses.
Youri Johnson's Lacrimal Temple is a manifestation of this-it evokes a spring, around which artworks orbit, such as the Iron Mask by Walter Wathieu, created during a moment of sadness. Around this original piece- a diversity of eclectic tears, responding to each other in a concert of laments."
Curated by Antoine Carbonne and Delphine de la Roche.
