“Meneer Vandalen Wacht Op Antwoord” (2019) is a mnemonic device for the order of mathematic operations (in Dutch). The project came to life while Jongeleen helped his sons with their math lessons and realized that many exercises were beyond him. He decided to spray paint problems and equations here and there across the city. Maybe someone would help him solve them! What Jongeleen hadn’t realized is how much mathematics had changed since his time in school. A generational gap appeared. It turned out that things today are calculated very differently then he and his peers had once been taught. This twist brought new characteristics to the project, which was very playful, slightly desperate and now carried a touch of melancholic nostalgia. In this sense, these works challenge the idea that the outcome of a calculation is absolute – after all, it only depends on the way you calculate it. “Meneer Vandalen Wacht Op Antwoord” also whipped up a storm on social media: to this day discussions continue as to what the correct solutions to these riddles might be.
