The artwork is rendered on a scroll of high-grade Egyptian papyrus grown along the Nile and was fundamental for visual and linguistic development. Papyrus reproduces with the wind and became an ancient motif that represents growth, vigor, and youth. The scroll is laced with date pollen used as a supplement for virility and to cultivate the harsh Egyptian Western desert where a single male date palm can fertilize 300 female palms.
Scroll IV focuses on the intersection of wind, architecture, and wind-pollinated plants, questioning whether wind is the ultimate origin of architecture. While architecture traditionally shelters against the wind, it also adapts to it.
Haseeb Ahmed uses diverse artistic techniques, from isometric drawings to Japanese calligraphy, to explore ancient architectural principles influenced by the wind. The scroll includes various scenes—from temple pillars to wind gusts—inviting the viewer to construct their own narrative. Ultimately, it asks: What would an architecture of the wind look like?
