In the Calibration series, Amélie Bouvier continues her investigation into how we observe the cosmos—not as a scientist, but as a researcher of human perception. These drawings are inspired by so-called test photographic plates (also known as calibration plates), which are used for focusing the telescope – an essential step in the astrophotography process.
During her visit to the archives of the Observatoire de Paris - site Meudon, Bouvier was captivated by these technical objects, which are fundamental to ensuring the precision of astronomical images. As in Moonlight on the Sun and other series, Bouvier considers every trace in these documents as meaningful in itself and reproduces in drawing those elements which she finds most compelling: the rhythms and textures, the forms which almost resemble musical scores, traces of an often overlooked part of the observation process.
